My Work
Here are some of my selected works from my work on Eagle Valley Student Media

Dance Team Package
Dance Team is one of if not the most underappreciated sports at Eagle Valley High School. So my partners and I decided to do a feature on them focusing on the challenges of the team, why they do dance, and other misconceptions surrounding dance. A dancer on the team who I'm friends with gave me the idea through sharing his experiences on the team so I decided that it would be a good idea to share these unique experiences with a broader audience. This was a challenging one to do since we weren't able to capture Dance Team's performances with higher quality cameras and had to rely on IPhone videos supplied by Dance Team but I made it work. I served as the producer for this story and took the lead on the majority of it. I was also the primary editor for this package and did a majority of the editing for this one which gave me a much better sense for using Premier Pro and also it gave me experience being able to work solo as a majority of the editing was done at home by myself. I learned how to color correct on the fly and do lower third graphics from that experience. One thing I would change about the story would be shortening it a bit. It did drag a bit towards the end but I think it was pretty solid overall despite it.

Dungeons and Dragons Package
Dungeons and Dragons is a game that gets tons of misconceptions and false information surrounding it. So alongside two other people, I worked on this package. This was my first real package for Eagle Valley Student Media so it was definitely not my best work. The audio is questionable at best due to a broken microphone and that's the main grow for me from that story. However I still think that we did a good job explaining the game and highlighting perspectives from the D&D community in Eagle Valley. I worked as the main editor on this, except for doing the color correction. But my main role was balancing the informative part of the story while also making sure the audience could understand as well. The other people on this story were also into D&D so I had to make sure that the concepts that came easy to them didn't go over the heads of the majority of the audience. For my first package, I'm quite proud of it.

Coffee Shop PackagePart of what I intend to do in media is highlight unknown or untold stories. So when my partner Emmanuel and I saw there was a new coffee shop open near our school, we decided to cover it. My partner covered the interviewing and editing while I focused on the behind the camera work, and the scripting for the story. I think that a positive of this story was making each part of the story really flow together well. One thing I would amend about this package would really just be cleaning up the editing slightly. I felt there were areas in the package that could've been a bit better but I'm still very satisfied with how the package came out. This is anecdotal, but I do think there was a uptick in business over there after the package aired. But even if only one person decided to go there because of the story, I would still be happy with that because at the end of day; it still got the word out.

Skiing PackageSkiing is an institution in Vail valley. But after the 2021-22 season had underwhelming snowfalls, people weren't as excited. So we decided to get people hyped about the Ski season. I scripted and contributed to the editing on this package and it was pretty interesting. I'm happy with it because of the good shots we used as B-Roll and our compilation segment showing off some skiing. But, one thing I would go back and change about this story would be just including a bit more VO to contextualize the story better. When fitted with the rest of the episode it worked better but as a standalone, it doesn't really. Another change would be gathering the stats b-roll by using screen recording software instead of just a phone camera. We didn't know how to use that software at the time but I would definitely learn to do it better and utilize that next time around. We had to put the story together relatively quickly since we only had two days to get the story done by the deadline when we finished gathering B-Roll. Making it quite challenging to complete in the final stretch, but we put in the extra time on that story to get it out and for that, I am proud of my work there.

Perfect AttendanceAt the start of second semester for 2022-23, a award was given out to a few students who achieved perfect attendance during first semester. So our group decided to interview a couple of the students who received the award as well as the assistant principal who set up the award. My role in this story was primarily structuring the script and about half the editing. Unfortunately, the students featured in this story were a bit unenthusiastic about getting the award to say the least. Which made the story feel a little off. There's not a lot One thing I could've improved on was the depth of field in the interviews. Most of them were done against a dull background. Overall, this one was an alright story, not really exception but there were things I did well. Mainly the structure of the story allowed for a good flow.

Speech and DebateThe EVHS Speech and Debate team had recently won the state title. But they still were a pretty unknown team and many in the school didn't even know that we have a Speech and Debate team. So we decided to do a package covering them. Several ways I would improve on this one would really just be getting more interviewees. There were originally going to be more but they didn't materialize so We couldn't interview them. As well as that would be getting more B-Roll, in the form of videos and pictures of them competing. I could've asked Mrs Uhnavy to provide those but I forgot so there would be a area to improve. Other than that I think this story does a good job at informing the audience of how Speech and Debate works and overall creating a good package.

Teacher ShortageEVHS, like many other schools across the state is currently suffering from teacher shortages. This package examined the variety of causes on the state level as well as locally as a part of a special report on teaching in the valley. This was a phenomenal package in my opinion. I did a good bit of research for the B-Roll and Voice Over. Despite its length it moved from one point to another without dragging on. An area I would improve would be the depth of field with the interviews. The background was just not very interesting to look at. I also slightly misspelled Qualman's name. It is spelled Philip, not Phillip as written on the lower thirds. This package won two awards from the Colorado Media Association; in the news writing category and got second place in the special in depth reporting category.

Art ShowcaseEvery year, EVHS showcases the works of our talented Art Students. So I decided to work on a story covering the artists and bring awareness to their work. Overall, I really enjoyed this package. It was well paced and it fit together very well. The main flaw was the camera focusing on the interview shots. We couldn't reshoot the interviews so that stayed in the final. Except that I really enjoyed making this one. The B-Roll that we collected was well shot and sequenced which was a first for me in my stories. I also think that the interviewees for this package were pretty diverse because they hadn't been interviewed for EVTV before so bringing them on was a nice change. Overall I would consider this to be a very solid package and a good way to close out the semester.

Ballot Measure 5BBallot Measure 5B was a ballot measure voted on in November of 2023. The measure brings additional funding to ECSD staff housing and improvements to schools in Eagle County. Overall, this was a pretty good story to close out 2023 and shows the state of Education in our county.

New Staff RolesSeveral EVHS staff members have shifted departments or roles during the 2023-24 academic year. We decided to talk to some of these teachers to find out what made them move departments. The lighting on this story was not ideal but other than that this is a pretty decent story.

Halloween StreetHalloween Street is an annual event where businesses around Eagle, CO hand out candy and treats to children in the local area. We decided to summarize the events and shoot footage of the event. This story was severely hampered by a malfunctioning microphone on the day of so we couldn't interview people at the event. However, we were able to improvise and put together a story.
